The son of John Gibb, William was born in Scotland 1859, arriving in New Zealand with his parents in 1876. His first art lessons were from his father and in later years he studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne where he exhibited. From 1892 until his death in 1931 he was a council member of the Canterbury Society of Arts. A well known landscape painter he is represented widely throughout New Zealand.
